A caterpillar can't plan its future from 'caterpillar consciousness', when it will actually be a butterfly living in a whole new world.

My take on it -
We plan our future assuming certain degrees of freedom of certain parameters of our anticipated future environment but those that we might actually encounter might be totally different thus making our 'future planning' redundant!
Does this mean we should not plan? No! It means plan very intelligently and plan for the unexpected and unimagined...and always remember the quote - 'If you want to make God laugh tell Him your future plans...He has his own plans!’ This will keep you mentally prepared if/when all your planning goes haywire!
So there should always be Plan A, Plan B and it would be great if there is a Plan C too! Then there is a higher probability of one of your plans coinciding or coming close to coinciding with His plan resulting in a much lower probability of you being caught unawares by future events (I wonder if our Planning Commission does this).
There is another school of thought that says 'Don't plan at all, just surrender to Him and He will take care.' This works if you are a Mother Theresa or a St. Francis or some such individual. For the rest of the ordinary mortals like me, the above logic holds :-)
